Cardrona Alpine Resort

New Zealand

641 m 37 km 10

Description

A mountain between Wanaka and Queenstown on New Zealand's South Island, on a high basin above the Cardrona valley, and one of the best equipped resorts in the country. The terrain is a wide open basin with a good spread of gentle and intermediate ground and steeper chutes above, and the terrain parks and Olympic standard halfpipes have made it a training base for teams from the northern hemisphere. The season runs from June to October. There is limited lodging on the mountain and most people stay in Wanaka, half an hour away, which is a lake town with a good food scene. Queenstown is around an hour by road over the Crown Range.

Treble Cone Ski Area

New Zealand

704 m 30 km 3

Description

The largest ski area on New Zealand's South Island, above Lake Wanaka, with the longest vertical in the country and a reputation for steep terrain that is well earned. Two basins hold most of the skiing, and the terrain suits confident intermediates and experts far better than beginners. The Motatapu chutes are the ones people talk about. The view down onto Lake Wanaka and across to Mount Aspiring is among the best from any ski area anywhere. The season runs from June to early October. There is no lodging on the mountain and Wanaka, half an hour away, is the base.
