Kranjska Gora

Upper Carniola

762 m 53 km 15

Description

Slovenia's best known resort, in the corner where Slovenia, Austria and Italy meet, beneath the Julian Alps. The World Cup giant slalom on the Podkoren course every March is one of the fixtures of the season. The skiing is gentle and wooded and mostly intermediate, which makes it a good place for families and improvers rather than for people chasing steeps. Snowmaking covers most of the area. Planica just up the valley has the ski flying hill where world records are set, and the Nordic centre there is open to visitors. The village is pleasant and prices are well below the Alps proper. Lake Bled is around forty minutes away and Ljubljana an hour and a half.

Krvavec

Slovenia

1,360 m 33 km 13

Description

A mountain area above the Kranj valley in Slovenia, twenty minutes from Ljubljana airport, which makes it one of the most conveniently placed ski areas in Europe. The terrain sits high on an open ridge with a good snow record and mostly intermediate skiing, and the view across the Kamnik Alps and down onto the valley is the memorable part. There is no village on the mountain. A cable car runs up from the valley and most people stay in Kranj or Ljubljana and travel out, which works well. Prices are moderate and the crowds are largely Slovenian. Lake Bled is around forty minutes away.
