Plan the trip

The oldest ski resort in Bulgaria, in the Rila mountains an hour from Sofia, set in pine forest below Musala which is the highest peak in the Balkans. The skiing is mostly intermediate with long tree lined runs and a good vertical, and there is a World Cup history on the Markudjik pistes above. Prices are among the lowest in Europe, which is the main reason British and other visitors come, and the ski schools are used to teaching in English.

The resort is a cluster of hotels rather than a village. The Rila monastery, a UNESCO site and the most important in Bulgaria, is around an hour and a half away and worth a day.
