Austria
Balderschwang – Hochschelpen/Riedberger Horn

Plan the trip
One of the snowiest corners of the Allgäu. Snowy enough that the snow cannons largely stand as insurance rather than as the main event, and large modern machines groom the pistes every night.
Après ski happens at the umbrella bar beside the Schelpenalp, and the week has its fixtures. Thursday is ladies' day with a reduced day ticket, and every Thursday at half past one you can join a tour of the piste machines and ride along with the people who cut the runs.
The Köpfle Cup in March is capped at sixty entrants aged from 8 to 88, and the season closes with a party at the end of the month. A place with a strong local following rather than an international one, which is much of the appeal.
