Gargellen

Plan the trip
The highest village in the Montafon in Vorarlberg, at the head of a side valley on the Swiss border, and by far the quietest ski area in the region. The terrain climbs to over 2200 metres with a good vertical and mostly intermediate skiing, and the area has a strong reputation for ski touring and for the Schmugglerrunde, a guided route that crosses into Switzerland by the old smuggling paths.
The village is tiny with a handful of hotels and very little going on in the evening, which is the point. The rest of the Montafon is on the same pass and gives a bigger day when you want one.
