Vorarlberg, Austria
Silvretta Montafon

Plan the trip
A long Vorarlberg valley of working villages, Schruns, Tschagguns, St Gallenkirch and Gaschurn, with a large modern ski area above them. Hemingway wintered in Schruns and wrote about it, and the town still has that ordinary lived in feel.
The skiing is wide sunny intermediate terrain across two linked sectors, with a strong park, good beginner areas, reliable snow up high and one genuinely steep descent for anyone who wants it.
Guesthouses and half board hotels are reasonably priced, with a ski bus along the valley and no queues to speak of. Quiet evenings, a night toboggan run, and a valley that has kept its own life alongside the tourism.
