Kaunertaler Gletscher
Plan the trip
A glacier at the head of the Kaunertal in Tyrol, reached by a long toll road that climbs past a reservoir, with skiing from 2150 up to over 3100 metres. The altitude makes it one of the more reliable places in Austria for early and late season snow, and there is a well built park that draws freeskiers through autumn and spring.
The terrain is mostly intermediate on open glacier ground, and the setting among the Ötztal Alps is dramatic. There is very little at the base and the Kaunertal is a quiet farming valley. The glacier road itself is a scenic drive in its own right.
