Plan the trip

A sunny mountain above Steinhaus in the Ahrntal, the long valley that runs up towards the Austrian border in the far north of South Tyrol. It shares a pass with Speikboden across the valley. The skiing is well groomed and mostly intermediate, with a long descent back to the valley floor and a strong snow record thanks to the altitude and the northern latitude. The area is quieter than the big Dolomite names further south.

The valley is German speaking and the food follows suit, with dumplings and speck rather than pasta. The Klausberg Flying Fox and a long summer toboggan run add something for the days off the skis, and Bruneck with its walled old town is half an hour down the valley.
