A small ski area at Alta in Finnmark, the far north of Norway, well inside the Arctic Circle. The terrain is modest, but the setting is the reason to come. Skiing here happens under the polar night in midwinter and in extraordinary light in spring, and the northern lights are a regular part of an evening.

Alta is a working town with an airport, and the rock carvings there are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The Finnmark plateau around it is Sami country with reindeer herding, and dog sledding and snowmobile trips are widely available.
