Avoriaz

Plan the trip
A car free resort of dark timber buildings that grow out of a cliff edge, built in the 1960s to a single architectural vision and unlike anywhere else in the Alps. Snow lies on the streets all winter and luggage moves by horse drawn sleigh, which you can arrange for your own bags on arrival.
It sits high for the Portes du Soleil, so it holds snow when Morzine below is thin. The terrain parks are excellent, the children's area is superb, and the Swiss Wall, one of the most famous mogul faces in the Alps, is on the doorstep. A day crossing into Switzerland is easy from here.
Accommodation is almost entirely apartments, and nearly all of it is ski in and ski out because everything is. There is an aquatic centre for the bad weather afternoon.
Very good for families who want no cars at all, and for anyone who would rather ski from the door than take a bus.
