Haute-Savoie, France
La Clusaz

Plan the trip
A working Savoyard village of stone and wood an hour from Annecy, with a church at the centre and a market that serves the people who live there. It has resisted becoming a resort in the way its neighbours have, and the local following is strong and French rather than international.
The skiing spreads across five sectors around the village, wooded and varied, good for families and improvers with enough steeper terrain to keep confident skiers busy. The altitude is modest, so aim for midwinter. Chalets, apartments and family hotels fill the village, with Annecy close enough for a day by the lake and Le Grand Bornand next door for a change of hill. Buy Reblochon at the market, because it comes from this valley, and find somewhere doing tartiflette properly.
