Plan the trip

A high area straddling the border between Lombardy and Trentino at the Tonale pass, with a glacier above it that reaches close to 3000 metres and keeps the snow reliable well into spring.

The pass itself is open and treeless with wide sunny intermediate skiing, and Ponte di Legno down the valley is a proper Italian town with an old centre and a gondola link up to the area.

The Presena glacier is the reason the season runs long, and it is one of the more accessible places in Italy to ski in April.

The Tonale pass was a front line in the First World War and there is an ossuary and a museum here. Prices are moderate and the crowds are largely Italian.
