Plan the trip

A car free village ringed by thirteen four thousand metre peaks, with the Fee glacier hanging directly above the rooftops. It is one of the most dramatic settings in the Alps and quite different in character from Zermatt over the ridge. The skiing is high, with the top station at over 3500 metres reached by an underground funicular that runs inside the mountain. That altitude means near certain snow and a season that runs well into spring, and summer race training happens on the glacier. The village is traditional, built in dark timber, and electric vehicles handle what little transport is needed. The Allalin revolving restaurant at 3500 metres is the highest of its kind in the world. It is expensive as Switzerland is, though noticeably less so than Zermatt, and it suits intermediates and families better than it suits people chasing steeps.
