The only place in North America where you can ski every month of the year, on the Palmer glacier high on the south face of Mount Hood in Oregon. Summer race camps run here through July and August.

Timberline Lodge itself is a national historic landmark, built by hand in the 1930s under federal work programmes, with carved beams and stonework throughout. It also served as the exterior of the hotel in The Shining, which visitors are usually aware of.

The winter terrain is mostly intermediate with a long descent and a good spread of runs, and the season is extremely long. Cloud and wind on the upper mountain are common, so keep an alternative in mind. Portland is around ninety minutes away.
