Les Sybelles

Plan the trip
A large linked area made from several small Maurienne villages, none of them famous and all of them inexpensive. La Toussuire and Le Corbier are purpose built and plain, while Saint Sorlin d'Arves and Saint Jean d'Arves are old farming villages with churches and working barns. Choose a village rather than a resort if you can, because the difference in atmosphere is large and the lift pass is the same either way. The skiing is a great deal of easy and intermediate cruising across a wide sweep of open mountainside, with quiet pistes and short queues. The off piste around the Ouillon is the part strong skiers come for, and it is worth taking a guide for. Apartments and gîtes go at some of the lowest prices for an area this size in France, and the Maurienne valley below has a working life that has nothing to do with tourism.
