Plan the trip

Valmorel is what purpose built French resorts might have looked like if anyone had cared. It was built in the 1970s in wood, slate and painted shutters, arranged around a car free pedestrian street, and linked over a col to Saint François Longchamp.

That pedestrian street genuinely works with young children. Nothing crosses it, everything is within a short walk, and the ski school meets at the bottom of the slope. The skiing is comfortable and family oriented across a series of open bowls, with well protected beginner areas and a good ski school worth reserving early. There is enough red mileage to keep an improving skier busy for a week.

Apartments and a couple of hotels sit within walking distance of the snow, at prices well below the neighbouring Trois Vallées. Half board is the easy option if you would rather not cook.
