Plan the trip

A resort in the West Virginia mountains built upside down. The village sits at the summit and the runs descend away from it, so you finish every run at the bottom and ride back up to where you are staying. It is an odd arrangement that works surprisingly well. Most of the terrain is gentle and groomed, with a steeper section dropping off the western side that strong skiers will have covered by lunchtime on the first day. Snowmaking does nearly all the work, so check recent weather rather than trusting the calendar. Condos and hotels fill the summit village, with restaurants and bars that are lively at weekends. Around four hours from Washington and five from Charlotte, with no useful airport nearby, which makes it right for a proper ski weekend if you live in the region.
