Plan the trip

Two mountains above Mauterndorf and St Michael in the Lungau, the high plateau in the south of Salzburg province that records some of the coldest temperatures in Austria and holds its snow accordingly. The skiing is quiet, sunny and mostly intermediate, with long descents back to both villages and very little in the way of queues. It is part of the Ski amadé pass, which opens a great deal more terrain if you have a car. Mauterndorf has a genuine medieval castle in the middle of the village that takes visitors, which is unusual in a ski town. Guesthouses and half board hotels are inexpensive, the Lungau has a strong local food tradition, and evenings are quiet.
