Obertauern

Plan the trip
The pistes form a ring around the village, so you can ski a full circuit in either direction and finish at your own front door. Almost every bed is ski in and ski out, which removes the daily logistics that dominate most ski holidays, and there is no need to plan a route because both directions bring you home.
Everything sits above the treeline on a high pass, which gives wide open intermediate skiing in every direction and one of the longest seasons in Austria, often from mid November into May. It is a functional strip of hotels rather than an old village, with an active but manageable après ski scene, half board as the norm and prices in the middle of the Austrian range. Pick a hotel you would be happy to sit in, because on a whiteout day the open ground gives you nothing to ski by.
