Austria
Hintertuxer Gletscher

Plan the trip
The only Austrian glacier open every day of the year, at the head of the Zillertal. It has reliable snow when nothing else does, and a long sustained descent from the glacier all the way down to the valley that is one of the biggest verticals in the country.
This is a resort to use at the very start or the very end of the season. That is when the glacier earns its keep, and race teams train here through autumn for the same reason.
The base at Hintertux is a small cluster of hotels rather than a village. Tux and Lanersbach a few kilometres down the valley have more life and the same bus.
Hotels with spas, mostly half board, at moderate prices. The Spannagelhöhle ice cave and the natural spa at Hintertux are both worth an afternoon.
