Plan the trip

Austrians rate the grooming here among the best in the country, and that is the reason to come. Two linked sectors above Kaltenbach in the Zillertal, with the Hochzillertal side offering wide sunny cruising that rewards speed and the Hochfügen side facing differently, holding snow longer and giving access to serious off piste and touring straight from the lifts. Take a guide on a powder day, because the terrain up there is real. The villages are small and unremarkable, so this is a place you come for the skiing and the value rather than the evenings. Guesthouses and mid range hotels are reasonably priced, half board is usual because there is not much else open, and the lift queues are far shorter than at Mayrhofen down the valley. Innsbruck is under an hour away.
