Austria
Hochkönig

Plan the trip
Three villages in Salzburg province, Maria Alm, Dienten and Mühlbach, linked into one long area beneath the Hochkönig massif. It is part of the Ski amadé pass. The layout means you ski from village to village rather than in laps, which gives a real sense of travelling somewhere across the day. The Königstour is the full traverse and back, and it takes most of a day at a comfortable pace.
The terrain is broad and sunny and mostly intermediate, and it suits families and confident intermediates well. The limestone wall of the Hochkönig above it is the view you remember. The villages are working Austrian settlements with half board guesthouses at reasonable prices, and the evenings are quiet.
