Plan the trip

Two villages in East Tyrol joined into one area, in a corner of Austria cut off from the rest of the province by the mountains and reached through Salzburg or Carinthia.

That isolation keeps it quiet. The terrain is wide and sunny and mainly intermediate with a good vertical, and it faces the Grossglockner, which is the highest mountain in Austria and stands right there in front of you.

Kals is a mountaineering village at the foot of the Glockner and Matrei is a market town in the valley below, and both have kept an ordinary local life. The Hohe Tauern national park surrounds the whole area. Prices are noticeably lower than in North Tyrol.
