Switzerland

Melchsee-Frutt

Plan the trip

A car free high plateau in central Switzerland at around 1900 metres, reached by cable car from Stöckalp, with three mountain lakes and a small cluster of hotels on the shore. There is no road up, which is the whole character of the place.

The skiing is sunny and mostly intermediate, high enough for a good snow record, and quiet compared with anywhere in the Bernese Oberland an hour away. Beginner terrain is good and the plateau is easy to move around on. Ice fishing on the frozen lakes in winter is unusual enough to be worth arranging, and there are winter walking trails across the plateau. Lucerne is an hour or so away, so day traffic fills the weekends and midweek stays calm.
