Plan the trip

A small Swiss village at the crossroads of the alpine passes, once a garrison town and until recently half forgotten, now rebuilt around a new resort development. The old street is still there and the contrast with the new buildings is stark.

The Gemsstock is the draw for strong skiers. It is steep, north facing and a serious freeride mountain with a long standing reputation, and a guide is the right way to use it. The linked Sedrun and Disentis sectors are gentler and sunnier, and skiing the length of the valley to Disentis and taking the train back is the day everyone remembers. Accommodation ranges from old guesthouses to a large new luxury development, plus apartments. Andermatt sits on the Glacier Express line, so arriving by train is both straightforward and beautiful.
