Red Lodge Mountain

Plan the trip

A mountain in south central Montana at the northern end of the Beartooth range, with a good vertical and terrain that suits confident intermediates well.

The snow is dry and the mountain is quiet, with none of the traffic that the resorts nearer Bozeman attract. Red Lodge town below is a former coal mining settlement with a preserved main street and a genuine local life, and it makes a pleasant base.

The Beartooth Highway starts here and climbs to nearly 3300 metres on its way to Yellowstone, though it closes for the winter. Billings is an hour or so away.
