The second highest mountain in Maine and the only lift served above treeline skiing in the eastern United States. The snowfields at the top are open bowl terrain of a kind that simply does not exist elsewhere in the east. Below them the mountain gives long sustained runs with more vertical than almost any eastern hill, and the grooming and snowmaking are taken seriously. It is remote. There is a village at the base with condos and hotels, and Kingfield down the road, but the nearest cities are a long way off, and that isolation keeps the crowds down. It is cold here in midwinter in a way that needs respecting. March and April are often the best weeks, with the snowfields at their most reliable.
