Carinthia, Austria
Nassfeld

Plan the trip
The largest area in Carinthia, on the Italian border at the Nassfeld pass, and one of the snowiest places in Austria because the weather comes up from the Adriatic and drops its load on this ridge.
The skiing is wide and sunny and mostly intermediate, with a long descent to the valley and a lift that runs from Sonnenalpe up to the pass. You can ski over the border into Italy for lunch and come back.
The Carinthian and Friulian cultures meet here, and the food reflects it more than in most of Austria. Villages in the Gail valley below are inexpensive and quiet, and the Pressegger See nearby is a summer swimming lake that freezes for skating in winter.
